Medicare Part B Excess Charges

What Are Medicare Part B Excess Charges?

Most providers accept Medicare’s approved amount as full payment. When they do, you pay only your deductible and coinsurance.
But if a provider does not accept assignment, they may charge up to 15% more than the approved amount.
That difference is called a Part B excess charge.

Quick Breakdown

  • Medicare pays 80%.
  • You pay 20%.
  • Some providers may add up to 15% more.

This only applies to non-participating providers who are still enrolled in Medicare.

Important to Know

Excess charges:

  • Do not apply to participating providers.
  • Do not apply to providers who opt out of Medicare.
  • Are prohibited in certain states.

Coverage Can Make a Difference

Some Medicare Supplement plans help cover these additional costs.
Plan G and Plan F include coverage for Part B excess charges.
Knowing what your plan includes can help you avoid surprise bills.
