Finding Affordable Student Health Insurance.

You know what it means to say, “poor college student.” It means almost everyone on campus.

When the words “health insurance” even come up, it probably just sounds “expensive.” And you might feel like you don’t need it.

But everyone needs health insurance. You might be young and healthy — but you need it just in case. Just in case of an accident — or just in case you get sick. Because sometimes the unexpected happens. And if you think insurance is expensive, wait until you see the hospital bill.

Things like the flu, allergies, colds, mono… they’re going around your campus all the time. And if you need care beyond over-the-counter meds, you’ll want health insurance to help you pay for it.

Although your school can probably bundle health insurance in with your tuition, there are much cheaper options that can give you the same or better coverage.

Find The Health Insurance Plan That’s Best For You

If an accident happens, hospital bills and medical costs can be very expensive. And the last thing you need is more bills on top of your tuition. If you have health insurance, you don’t have to worry about the huge bills.

Here are some popular and affordable plans:

  • A Health Maintenance Organization or HMO can offer you low premiums and co-payments — and usually there’s no deductible. An HMO lets you choose your doctor or OB/GYN from their “network” of healthcare providers and your visits will be covered — with a low co-payment of starting around $10. Filling a prescription typically costs the same.

With an HMO, routine visits to your doctor and prescription medicine will be more manageable for your budget.

  • A Preferred Provider Organization or PPO is a lot like an HMO. It’s another kind of managed care plan, and it offers you low premiums, co-payments, and deductibles. But it also allows you flexibility when it comes to the doctors you choose to see. A PPO will allow you to see other healthcare providers outside of its preferred network and still have coverage. But coverage is less than it would be with an inside care provider. An HMO tends to be cheaper, but many people find that the flexibility of a PPO is worth it.

Traveling And Studying Abroad…

Most students don’t know that if you travel abroad, a lot of insurance plans will not cover you. But you can find many insurance plans that are designed to cover you abroad. Or you can look into an international insurance policy.

If you’re planning on traveling, or spending a semester overseas, make sure you have an insurance policy that goes with you.
