…More Info About Short Term Health Insurance

We should never go without health insurance — the risk is just too high. But what about times when you’re in-between jobs or you just graduated? It’s going to be worth the money to stay covered while you look for a job. A short term health plan is affordable coverage for college graduates looking for their first job and they are ideal for people who are in between jobs, or searching for a new career.

How Short Term Health Plans Work

Short term health plans allow you to get health coverage temporarily, ranging from one to 6 months. Short term plans function the same way as health insurance from an employer. But because of the short length of the plan, you can get short term coverage at low rates.

Finding A Traditional Plan

Most short term policies are traditional plans that use the “indemnity” model of insurance. In an indemnity plan, you pay for care from any health provider you want, and the insurance company reimburses you. As long as the medical service is covered under your plan, your insurance pays for it after you file a claim.

Traditional plans, sometimes called fee for service plans, are usually more expensive but offer the most complete coverage you can find.

Finding A Managed Care Plan

Other short term plans are based on Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans — a kind of managed care.

A temporary PPO plan works the same way a regular PPO plan works. Your temporary PPO plan has a “network” of healthcare providers like doctors and hospitals. Within this network you’ll have discounted costs for your premiums, deductibles, and co-payments.

In a PPO plan, you still get coverage when you visit doctors and healthcare providers outside of the network, but your costs may be higher. Staying within your PPO's network is the best way to keep your costs down.

Find The Right Plan

While you’re searching for a job, short term health coverage gives you affordable protection. Managed care plans and or traditional plans are both great options. Regardless of which kind you choose, you want a plan that fits both your needs and your budget.
