 Eligibility

There are two Blue MedicareRx Prescription Drug Plans in Illinois. The Blue MedicareRx Value Plan features a low monthly premium and a deductible for Tier 2 and Tier 3 drugs. The Blue MedicareRx Plus Plan has no deductible and features lower co-pays. Both plans use a formulary, which is basically a list of drugs covered by your plan.

To be eligible for either Blue MedicareRx plan, you must be entitled to receive services under Medicare Part A and /or enrolled in Medicare Part B and live in the plan’s service area. You cannot be enrolled in any other Medicare Part D plan at the time you wish to enroll. In fact, if you are currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you must receive your Medicare prescription drug benefits through that plan. However, you may enroll in Blue MedicareRx if you have Original Medicare or Medigap insurance.

Enrollment

There are very specific times when you are allowed to enroll in a Blue MedicareRx plan. The best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which is basically a 7 month period of time that begins 3 months before you turn 65 and ends 3 months after you turn 65. In addition to your specific enrollment period, there is an annual enrollment period, where anyone enrolled in Medicare can make changes to their health care coverage by enrolling in Blue MedicareRx for the first time or making changes to an existing plan. The annual enrollment period for the 2012 year begins on October 15 and ends December 7. For your changes to be in effect on January 1, 2012, you must meet this deadline of Dec 7.
